In pursuit of computational photography
OlyProbe is a free Windows app from Computography Lab™ for advanced photographers using Olympus/OM SYSTEM professional-tier cameras that support tethered control (OM-1 Mark II, OM-1, E-M1X, E-M1 Mark III, E-M1 Mark II, E-M1, and E-M5 Mark II).
OlyProbe lets users capture, save, load, and share settings configurations covering more than 100 camera settings, including Computational Photography and other advanced settings, plus many others not exposed in OM Capture or image editors. Saved setting configurations are saved as reusable “.cheat” files that can be loaded into the camera on demand. It’s like having an infinite number of Custom shooting modes!
Through a USB or router connection, OlyProbe can read and save virtually all the current settings in the connected camera, which is especially useful for studio work, where very precise settings configuration must be maintained over multiple shooting sessions or applied on multiple cameras.
OlyProbe also has the unprecedented ability to create cheat files from EXIF data in .JPG and .ORF image files (including hidden settings not visible to OM Capture, OM Workspace, and other applications) to save and reuse the settings that “got the shot”. This is great for Landscape, Wildlife, and Motorsport, where setting decisions in the field produce a look or effect to be remembered and reused.
The program also includes a “bracket analyzer” that lets the user drag and drop a group of bracket shots to create a single cheat capturing all the parameters used in the bracket set. You can even drag in a whole folder of bracket shots and the analyzer will figure out which shots go together for each bracket set in the folder.
The app is a lightweight program for Windows 10 and 11 that consumes marginal system resources, enabling it to run on even the most minimal PC or laptop. Like OM Capture, OlyProbe can communicate with the camera either by USB-tethered or router-based Wi-Fi connection to capture and load camera settings.
OlyProbe is now ready for “pressure testing” by photographers willing to help us get ready for prime time. Every multi-camera owner knows how each model has its quirks and peculiarities, and we want to ensure that our app will perform equally well across all supported camera models under all field conditions.
